At Perranporth Primary School we believe that the Arts encompass a wide range of subject areas and disciplines including Music, Dance, Drama, Art and Design. Arts at our school means providing our pupils not only with the opportunity to learn about and participate in each of these areas, but also providing them with the platform from which to be creative, to express themselves, find success and share these experiences, talents and abilities through performance.
At Perranporth we have 4 keys aims:
- to ensure EVERY child has the opportunity to engage with a variety of art forms, including through cross curricular work.
- To give all pupils an opportunity to exhibit work or take part in a performance at least once a year.
- to ensure that, over each academic year, 12% of curriculum time is dedicated to the arts in Key stage 1 (2.5 hours a week) and Key stage 2 (3 hours a week).
- To ensure the teaching staff has access to regular continuous professional development in order to refresh creativity and to keep up to date with new initiatives.
The aim of art including craft and design in the primary curriculum is concerned with fostering an enjoyment of the subject, making children culturally aware, sensitive to the feelings of others and responsive to the world around them through the development of creative thought and visual literacy.
Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. As an integral part of culture, past and present, it helps pupils understand themselves and relate to others. It also increases self-discipline and creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfillment. At Perranporth Community Primary School we recognise the importance of music as a part of the curriculum.
Through our creative curriculum children are given frequent opportunities through literacy, topic work, music and dance to participate in role play and drama activities.
