Computing

Intent

At Perranporth, we use Purple Mash to teach computing. This program is used alongside supplemental tools and activities to create an inspiring and engaging computing curriculum that not only gives us the ability to respond to children’s interests, but also gives our pupils a comprehensive and effective skill set, readying them for becoming valuable members of a digital world whilst staying safe online.

Purple Mash units have been carefully matched to our curriculum planning so that cross curricular links bring learning to life in meaningful contexts.

The scheme of work is intended to support our teachers in delivering fun and engaging lessons that raise standards and allow all pupils to achieve by building on prior learning whilst feeling confident to challenge themselves to try the next step.

Our aspiration is for every child to access an exciting, rich, relevant and challenging Computing curriculum. For pupils to become responsible, respectful and competent users of data, information and communication technology that equips them with the capability to use technology throughout their lives whilst being able to minimise risk to themselves or others.

Implementation

We implement the following procedures in order to achieve desired outcomes:

EYFS

Our Early Years curriculum is creative, active, exploratory and playful. It engages and encourages critical thinking through ICT scenarios, based on experience in the real world, such as in role-play.

Outdoor exploration is an important aspect, supported by ICT toys such as outdoor music stations, remote group Bluetooth headphones, controllable toys, mini iPads and walkie-talkie sets.

KS1

Children are introduced to coding language and skills in topic based scenarios. These include problem solving activities, the giving and writing of instructions for specific tasks and programs and the debugging simple errors.

KS1 children are introduced to digital literacy through the use of personal logins/passwords to access and store their own work in different platforms. They will use a range of early presentation and data software within Purple Mash, as well as learning to use hardware such as iPad cameras, programmable toys and using devices for everyday activities such as ordering dinners and registrations.

 KS2

Computing at KS2 builds on prior knowledge and aims to challenge inquisitive minds that strive to find out how and why things work. Children gain more in-depth knowledge of coding using programmable toys and by writing and debugging programs for a variety of purposes and outcomes. They use green screening technology to bring learning to life in cross curricular contexts and use computing technology to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information in purposeful ways to support learning through all subjects.

Digital Leaders

Our ‘Digital Leaders’ are prominent and proficient. These children are responsible for supporting staff and children in delivering excellent Computing sessions.

Impact

By the time they leave Perranporth School, children will have gained key knowledge and skills in the three main areas of the computing curriculum: computer science (programming and understanding how digital systems work), information technology (using computer systems to store, retrieve and send information) and digital literacy (evaluating digital content and using technology safely and respectfully). They are competent and safe users of Computing systems with a good understanding of how technology works. They will have developed skills to express themselves and be creative in using digital media and be equipped to apply their skills in Computing to different challenges as a responsible digital citizen going forward in a digital world.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Pupil discussions and interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Formative assessment at the end of each unit.
  • Governor monitoring with our subject computing link governor.
  • Photo evidence and images of the pupils practical learning and/or records of learning stored in digital files and/or Learning Journey books.
  • Learning walks and reflective staff feedback (teacher voice).
  • Dedicated Computing leader time.
